Jodie Whittaker Reveals She Cried After Landing the Role in Doctor Who

Jodie Whittaker decided to reveal her reaction after finding out that she will be the first female lead in the cult British sci-fi series Doctor Who and the show’s Thirteenth Doctor. During her recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Whittaker admitted that she was overwhelmed with emotions after finding out the news and even started crying.

“I went to what I thought was just a final audition and a chat with all the grownups,” – the 36-year-old actress said. I was being all steely and when they told me the part was mine, I just started crying. They started telling me lots of important things about the role and all I could think was, ‘I really want to WhatsApp someone'”

Whittaker also added that she felt “joy, fear, and responsibility” to the fans.

Since its premiere in 1963, Doctor Who always had a male lead, with 12 actors playing the role of The Doctor. After Peter Capaldi, who played the Twelfth Doctor, decided to leave the show in 2017, BBC decided to take a different approach and choose a female lead with Jodie Whittaker eventually getting the part. This decision caused some controversy, but most of the fans ended up being pleased with the decision after Whittaker made her debut in Doctor Who’s 2017 Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time.” Season 11 of the show is set to premiere on October 4th.

Before becoming the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker gained recognition for her work in television series Black Mirror, Broadchurch and The Smoke. She also portrayed roles in movies like Get Santa, Black Sea and Adult Life Skills.
