Man jailed for fracturing ‘cheating’ wife’s skull after taunting him with Rihanna’s song

Image
A teacher was today jailed for more than eight years for attacking his wife with a machete - after she taunted him over her affair with another man. David Wing, 56, had only been married for a year when wife Yvonne, 45, began having sex with the son of their landlady. The court heard the relationship with lover Don Watkins, 37, was at first permitted by her new husband. But Wing later logged in to his wife’s Facebook account and read messages between the married lovers discussing plans to run away together. Wing was cleared of attempted murder for the machete attack, but is facing jail after he admitted grievous bodily harm. The court heard he was 'provoked' to attack his wife - who taunted him by repeatedly playing Rihanna song Love on the Brain. Prosecutor James Wilson said Mrs Wing was attacked by the machete with a 26inch blade - and suffered a gashed forehead and fractured skull. Mr Wilson said: 'There was a slightly unusual aspect to their relationshi

Portrait of a Nigerian princess dubbed 'African Mona Lisa' smashes estimates at London auction, sold for £1.2m

Image
A long-lost portrait of a Nigerian princess dubbed the "African Mona Lisa" sold at auction in London on Wednesday for £1.2 million (1.4 million euros, $1.7 million), exceeding estimates and setting a record for the artist. The 1974 painting of Adetutu "Tutu" Ademiluyi, by Nigerian artist Ben Enwonwu, was expected to fetch up to £300,000 (339,000 euros, $414,000) when it went under the hammer at Bonhams auction house. It described the painting of an Ife royal princess which recently turned up in a London flat after not being seen in decades as "rare and remarkable". "The portrait of Tutu is a national icon in Nigeria, and of huge cultural significance," said Giles Peppiatt, Bonham's director of modern african art. He uncovered the work after a family in north London contacted him following lucrative recent sales of Nigerian artworks at auction. Peppiatt added the family were "pretty astounded" to learn it was "a mis

Pregnant women in Ghana taking bleaching pills to lighten the skin of their unborn babies

Image
A growing trend among women in Ghana sees them take bleaching pills during pregnancy to lighten the skin of their unborn babies while they are still in the womb. Medical experts say these illegal drugs can cause birth defects, including damage to limbs and internal organs. Ghana's Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says using Glutathione pills for this purpose is dangerous, adding it wants "the general public to know that no product has been approved by the FDA in the form of a tablet to lighten the skin of the unborn child”. The practice is growing in Ghana, according to the FDA, with pills often smuggled into the country inside luggage at airports in large quantities. Although comprehensive data has not yet been gathered, the body says market surveillance and stakeholder activity have helped to reveal the trend among women crosses socio-economic divides. Security agencies and police are working together to arrest and prosecute companies and individuals in possession

2019: Pastor Chris Okotie backs Buhari, says Nigerians should give him total support

Image
Founder of the House of God International Ministry,  Chris Okotie,   has opined that the ongoing anti-graft war is enough reason for Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari, should he opt to seek re-election in 2019. Okotie said he has been able to take the battle “to clean the Augean stable” to the corridors of corrupt cabals that have held Nigeria hostage for years. In an article, the former Presidential candidate stressed that if the ongoing anti-graft war is allowed to get to,“logical conclusion, it would free the country from the labyrinth of a deeply entrenched tribe of Machiavellian politicians whose sole purpose for seeking power is to loot our common patrimony.” The article reads: “These, certainly are not the best of times for the grex venalium (the venal crowd) popularly known by ordinary Nigerians as treasury looters. “The ongoing battle by President Muhammadu Buhari against this corrupt cabal who have held this nation hostage for years leaves no one in

Image
Tunisia's ministry of culture has banned the Oscar-nominated film "Call Me By Your Name", a love story between two men, one of its main distributors said on Wednesday. The feature film was due to be screened on Wednesday night in the capital Tunis but the venue announced on Facebook that the event had been "cancelled". It was "banned," the distributor Lassaad Goubantini told AFP, denouncing the decision as "an attack on liberties" motivated by "the subject of the film". A story of love between a 17-year-old and an older man, "Call Me By Your Name" has been nominated for best picture at the 90th Academy Awards to be handed out on Sunday. AFP was unable to reach the culture ministry to confirm the reported ban on Wednesday. "We filed an application for authorisation with the ministry of culture," said Goubantini. "We even proposed a viewing in exceptional circumstances before the screening to kn

Money ritual: My husband employed Imam to have sex with me for 3 days – Wife

Image
A divorce seeking wife has accused her husband of employing an Islamic preacher to have sex with her for money-making ritual purposes. The woman, Musilimotu Olashuyi, 48, claimed that she introduced her husband, Gbenga Olashuyi, 55, to the unnamed Alfa because she used to frequent his mosque for prayers. She said at some point, the Alfa noticed that Olashuyi’s business wasn’t going well, a situation that made her to introduce the Alfa to him. However, Musilimotu said, the Alfa ended up committing adultery with her, allegedly on the instruction of her husband. She made the allegations at the Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Wednesday. “It was with my husband’s consent that the Alfa slept with me for three days,’’ Musilimotu disclosed, while praying the court to dissolve the marriage. She alleged that her husband had also conspired with the Alfa to use her for money ritual. She narrated to the court, “Actually, my husband got to know the Alfa through me because I alwa
