Olumide Akpata has emerged winner of the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) national elections, after defeating two other contestants who are Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs). Olumide Akpata who won the election with a totla of 9,891 votes of the total 18,256 ballots cast, is now the first non-SAN to emerge president of the NBA in years. His closest rival, Babatunde Ajibade (SAN) polled 4,328 votes and Dele Adesina (SAN) polled 3,982 votes. The election commenced at exactly 11 am on Wednesday, July 29, and ended at 11 pm on Thursday, July 30. It was a virtual voting process where registered members of the association logged into the National Officers Election webpage with their Supreme court numbers and cast their votes. On Thursday, July 30, Nigerian Center for Disease Control announced that Nigeria recorded 481 new cases of the COVID-19. The new cases were spread across 14 states and the FCT. Here is the breakdown of the cases across the states. On Tuesday the nominations for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards were announced by Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Josh Gad, and Tatiana Maslany. Netflix came in hot with 160 nominations, making it the most of any streamer or network. A week after a US court dismissed the fraud case brought against Olalekan Ponle, popularly referred to as Woodberry, the suspected fraudster has reported back to court. Mr Ponle, popularly known as Woodberry, was arrested, alongside Ramon Abbas (Hushpuppi) in the United Arab Emirate on June 10 for multiple fraud charges after a raid by operatives of the Dubai crime unit. The duo were extradited to the U.S. on July 2. According to the complaint against Mr Ponle, an unnamed Chicago company was tricked into sending wire transfers totalling $15.2 million. Companies based in Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New York and California also were victims of the fraud, prosecutors say. Although the charges against Mr Ponle have been dismissed, the indictment which summed his offences into eight counts charge is still active. On Saturday, the defendant appeared in court. An Egyptian court jailed several young girls for two years after they were accused and arrested for posting  indecent  videos on TikTok. The women were also fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds (nearly $19,000) each for “violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family,” inciting debauchery and promoting human trafficking, according to a statement from the public prosecutor. The prosecution statement named just two of the defendants — 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old Mawada al-Adham — and said the other three helped run their social media accounts. Both women recently vaulted to TikTok fame, amassing millions of followers for their video snippets set to catchy Egyptian club-pop tracks. In their respective 15-second clips, the women wearing makeup pose in cars, dance in kitchens and joke in skits — familiar and seemingly tame content for the platform. But their social media stardom became their undoing in Egypt, where citizens can land in prison for vague crimes

A man has been arrested by the Police in Miami after he opened fire on a mother and her son for failing to observe ‘social distancing’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 47-year-old Douglas Marks from Miami confronted the woman and her son in the lobby of the Crystal Beach Suites in Miami Beach on Monday evening. According to the affidavit, Marks told Veronica Pena and her son who were visiting Miami Beach from New Mexico: ‘You aren’t social distancing.’ He then asked them to leave the hotel before bringing out a black firearm which he shot ‘several’ times in the lobby. No one was injured in the shooting but Marks was later arrested by Miami Beach police. One witness, who spoke to Local10 but chose to remain anonymous said: ‘He tried to shoot the girl and the kid.’ Marks has allegedly confessed to the shooting but told detectives that he fired his weapon because he was being followed, and asked the front desk to call 911. Prominent lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has testified against Ibrahim Magu, before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel. He also submitted six exhibits, including two video clips and some documents. The embattled anti-corruption agency boss was was arrested on July 6, 2020 over corruption charges and brought before the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel. Magu was accused of being unable to account for the interest accrued to recovered funds of about N550billion. He was at the same accused of insubordination and purchase of property in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. Magu was also accused of not being transparent in managing assets recovered by the commission. Mike Ozekhome has now appeared before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel, as he spoke about the alleged leadership failures of Magu and the investigative deficiencies of the anti-graft agency.
