The Federal Government has lifted the ban on Emirates Airlines from operating in Nigeria. This development comes after the United Arab Emirates UAE agreed to start issuing visas to Nigerians. The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, announced the decision to lift the ban on the airline via his Twitter handle this afternoon, Wednesday, September 30. “UAE has written to state that they agree to issue visas to Nigerians, consequently decision has been reached to allow Emirates to fly into Nigeria. Commencement of the Visa issuance is condition precedent. Please bear with this unusual situation. Many thanks.” On September 18, the Minister announced that the airline had been included in the number of airlines barred from flying into Nigeria. Former Minister of State for Education, Kenneth Gbagi has been declared wanted by the police over his hotel staffs who were allegedly stripped naked over a missing N5,000. According to a report by Sahara Reporters, Kenneth Gbagi last Friday arrested the four staff working in Signatious Hotel, Warri, Delta State, after they were stripped naked and photographed inside the hotel before finally handing them over to the police. After dehumanizing the four staff, a male and three females, they were taken to the Ebrumede Police Station to be remanded in custody. In a statement released by the Delta state police spokesperson DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Gbagi was accused of refusing to honor several police invitations. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in the country to suspend the September 1 new tariff. The order which was issued on Tuesday night, came after the federal government reached an agreement with the organised Labour on the suspension of strike over the hike in electricity tariff and increase in pump price of petrol. NERC said that from September 28 to October 11, the DisCos will revert all charges to the tariff existing as of August 31. Three Nigerian nationals have appeared in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court, Northern Cape on charges of human trafficking. This follows after members of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, K9, Tactical Response Team, Crime Scene Investigation and Home Affairs raided guest houses that were used as brothels in Kuruman and Rustenburg and rescued 11 victims of human trafficking on Sunday morning. Five suspects were arrested. Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, who confirmed the development on Tuesday, September 29, said that three of the suspects – Chikwuma Emmanuel Ibekwe, 37, Emmanuel Ikechkwu Okafor, 28 and Ifeanyi Michel Udechi, 30, appeared in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were remanded in custody. “The case was postponed until October 6.” Mulaudzi stated that the two other suspects, who were arrested in Rustenburg, were expected to appear in court on Tuesday. He said that the female victims who are between the ages of 20 and 39, were working as prostitutes

The Lagos State Government has cancelled the planned parade for the Independence Day celebration. A statement from Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, also noted that other activities would involve the gathering of more than 50 people were cancelled. It quoted Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as urging Lagosians not to relax their vigilance against COVID-19. It read in part, “The Lagos State Government opted for a low key celebration of the 60th Independence Anniversary due to the ravaging effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is still with us. “Governor Sanwo-Olu directed that the planned parade and other activities that involve the gathering of more than 50 people should be cancelled. “He congratulates Lagosians on this auspicious occasion and strongly advises that they should celebrate quietly at home and pray for the country. They should also observe the COVID-19 protocols, including wearing of face masks to protect themselves and their loved ones.

A former staff of First Bank, Oreoluwa Adesakin, has been convicted for fraud and handed a total term of 98 years in prison by Justice Muniru Olagunju of the Oyo State High Court. But she will spend just seven years in jail. Adesakin was found to have committed financial fraud against First Bank to the tune of N49,320,652.32. She also stole $368,203.00 belonging to the bank, which she converted to her personal use.  Adesakin, before she was busted by the bank and sacked, was its Money Transfer Operator, saddled with the responsibility of effecting payments through Western Union Money Transfer and MoneyGram platforms, The convict was prosecuted by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), on a 14-count charge, bordering on stealing, forgery and fraudulent accounting. The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC has uncovered N2.67bn of funds meant for school feeding programmes stashed in private bank accounts. The anti-graft agency made the revelation on Monday during its second National Summit on Corruption at the Presidential Villa in Abuja,  Sahara Reporters  reports. Prof Bolaji Owasanoye, Chairman of the commission, said the money was meant to feed children in federal colleges around the country during the COVID-19 lockdown. He added that ICPC also discovered over N2.5bn appropriated by a deceased senior civil servant in the Ministry of Agriculture for himself and accomplices. Some 18 buildings, 12 business premises and 25 plots of land were also recovered in the same ministry. Owasanoye said under Open Treasury Portal review carried out between January to August 15, 2020, out of 268 ministries, departments and agendas, 72 of them had cumulative infractions of N90m.
