Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has explained reasons why he abandoned his trial by the Nigerian Judicial system and escaped out of the country in 2017. Kanu, who was re-arrested and brought back to Nigeria on Sunday, June 27, told the Federal High Court in Abuja that he fled Nigeria to save his life. His appearance before the court came after the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, disclosed to journalists that Kanu was “intercepted” by security agents following a collaborative effort between security agencies in Nigeria and the Interpol. Shortly after he was docked before trial Justice Binta Nyako by the Federal Government, Kanu asked for permission of the court to speak even though he was without his lawyer. Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a fugitive leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). The remand order was sequel to an application by a federal government lawyer, Shuaibu labaran. Kanu was said to have been intercepted by joint security operatives of the government. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who made the disclosure in a joint press briefing with the DSS and Police, said Kanu was arrested on Sunday, June 27, 2021. However, the briefing was silent on where he was arrested. Ruling on the request for remand in the custody of the DSS, Justice Nyako, held that the prosecution should inform Kanu’s lawyer of his rearrest and remand in the custody of the DSS. The judge subsequently adjourned till July 26 for a continuation of trial. Kanu was granted bail in 2017 and subsequently jumped bail a

The details were still sketchy at the time of writing, with no information of when and where he was arrested. Emma Powerful, IPOB spokesman, denied the news of the arrest while Frank Mba, police spokesman, is yet to respond to TheCable’s enquiry on whether the police was involved in the development. Kanu is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony instituted against him at the federal high court in Abuja in response to years of campaign for the independent Republic of Biafra through IPOB. A high-powered presidential delegation visited the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, to seek marriage for President Buhari’s only son, Yusuf.
