The Ebonyi state police command has debunked report of 30 people being killed in an attack, purportedly carried out by suspected herdsmen in some communities in Ebonyi state.  The state police spokesperson, Loveth Odah who assured Ebonyi people of adequate security, said the attack happened at Nwori Ndobasi and Odoke villages in Ado local government area of Benue in the early hours of Sunday May 30, and not in Ebonyi state.  The police spokesperson also said traders from Ebonyi LGA who crossed over to buy and sell as had been the practice over the years, were caught in the cross fire during the attack. Many people have sustained different degrees of injury after an explosion rocked parts of mile 3 market in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Rivers State in the early hours of today Monday, May 31. Streets in many parts of the SouthEast states are currently deserted following the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB. The order is to mark two days of Remembrance for Biafra Day. Many state governments and security agents last week asked residents of the state to ignore the order and go about their lawful businesses. The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the gruesome murder of former Special Adviser Political to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, in the early hours of Sunday in Owerri, Imo State, by unknown gunmen. The armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab carrying Ahmed Gulak and two others on their way to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a flight, according to the Command’s public relations officer Elkana Bala. The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has seized jewellery worth N14 billion from former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke. EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, made this known at the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating the assessment and status of recovered loot on Friday in Abuja He also said the Houses seized from the former Minister is also valued at 80million dollars. The anti-graft chairman said that Diezani’s jewellery are still in the custody of the agency, adding it had not been auction but had been finally forfeited to the Federal Government. He said that court processes, procedures and administrative exigencies had stalled some of the seized assets to be auctioned by the anti -graft agency. A 43-year-old Ibadan-based businessman Amos Olugbenga Olaniyan has been arrested by the EFCC over a N128 million Ponzi Scheme. He was arrested following series of petitions by victims, said EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren. The petitioners alleged that Amos through his company, DHIL Nigeria Limited, notoriously called Crime Alert Security Network Investment, persuaded them to invest in a network scheme which offered a monthly 30% returns on investment. According to some of the victims, they were persuaded to invest after listening to the suspect’s weekly radio programme. However, after investing their monies they neither received the promised interest nor get a refund of their capital since 2020. Exasperated, they petitioned the EFCC. The Commission, in the course of investigation, discovered that the suspect operated a classic Ponzi scheme and had defrauded hundreds of people, some of whom reported orally to the Commission. United States District Court for the Western District of Washington at Tacoma, has ordered the indefinite detention of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s aide, Bidemi Rufai who is accused of being involved in $350,000 COVID-19 unemployment fraud in the United States. The Ogun state Governor’s aide was arrested at a US airport on May 14, while on his way to Amsterdam. He was accused of using the identities of more than 100 Washington residents to steal more than $350,000 in unemployment benefits from the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD) during the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Rufai’s release on bail on Wednesday May 26, was stalled after United States Department of Justice raised an alarm of the surety he provided being a suspected fraudster. The U.S. authorities said the surety provided, a nurse, Nekpen Soyemi is a suspected fraudster and should not be allowed to stand surety for Mr Rufai. President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Farouk Yahaya as the new chief of army staff. Yahaya, a major general, will replace Ibrahim Attahiru who  died in a military plane crash alongside 10 other officers last week Friday . Onyema Nwachukwu, acting director of defence information, released a statement announcing Yahaya’s appointment on Thursday. Yahaya was the former general officer commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian army. Before his appointment, he was the theatre commander of the counter-terrorism military outfit in the north-east which is code-named operation Hadin Kai. Yahaya, the 22nd chief of army staff, will be expected to build on the efforts of the late Attahiru in tackling insecurity in the country. Attahiru, who died aged 54, was the shortest-serving army chief in Nigeria’s history, having only replaced Tukur Burutai in January. He was appointed alongside Lucky Irabor, chief of defence staff; Zubairu Gambo, chief of naval staff; Isiaka Amao, chief of air staff.

A 34-year-old man, Okpegboro Avwerosuo, from Ughelli North Ugherue in Delta State has been arrested by Bayelsa State Police Command for allegedly butchering his roommate and putting his body into a sack bag before hiding it in the nearby bush. The incident which was said to have happened over the weekend at Sagbama community, the headquarter of Sagbama Local Government Area was kept secret until the youths of the community discovered the decomposed body of the deceased in the bush on Monday. Sunday Dare, Minister of Youths and Sports Development, has kicked against the bill seeking to scrap the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC. The bill sponsored by Awaji Abiante, a lawmaker from Rivers State had last week, passed through second reading at the green chamber. The lawmaker seeks to use the bill to amend section 315 (1)(a) of the 1999 constitution.
