An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has ordered seven men to be remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre for allegedly gang-raping 11-year-old Favor Okechukwu to death.  The suspects, Ajom Tabi, 37; Omobolanle Olowookere, 41; Aliu Bilyamin, 24; Emmanuel Okon, 24; Bolarinwa Olamilekan, 24; Badmus Abdulateef, 20; Azeez Quadri, 22; and Sunday Odunayo, 22, were arraigned on Friday, October 30th. They were charged with three counts of rape, murder, and defilement According to reports, Chief Magistrate O.G. Oghre did not take the plea of the suspects pending legal advice. She instead ordered the police to return the case file to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The magistrate also granted bail to Olowookere (the second suspect) after counsel, Spurgeon Ataene, told the court of her non- involvement in the case. A teacher, Mrs. Ndubisi Obiechina, has narrated how she lost two pregnancies while in the custody of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) over a suspect to which she was distantly acquainted. Narrating her ordeal before the Lagos State Judicial Panel on EndSARS protest, Ndubisi said that she was detained and tortured along with her husband, Okwuchukwu, for 22 days by SARS in 2017. “They brutalised me in the name of interrogating me. As a pregnant woman, I did not eat or drink for one week and in the process I lost the baby. “It was later after I left SARS that I went to the hospital that I found that the baby was gone, and I had to flush it out,” she said. The teacher identified some of the SARS officers who allegedly tortured the couple as Phillip Rieninwa, Christian and Haruna Idowu. Legendary British actor Sean Connery, best known for playing fictional spy James Bond in seven films, has died aged 90, his family told the BBC on Saturday. U.S. forces have rescued an American hostage in northern Nigeria. Philip Walton, who was abducted by a criminal gang, was rescued by SEAL Team 6, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports. Officials had feared the gang would sell him to terrorists operating in the region.  “U.S. forces conducted a hostage rescue operation during the early hours of 31 October in Northern Nigeria to recover an American citizen held hostage by a group of armed men,” Chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement Saturday. “This American citizen is safe and is now in the care of the U.S. Department of State.” The statement said no U.S military personnel were injured in the operation. Walton, described by a defense official as an American farmer, was abducted in Niger earlier this week, Martin reports. The management of the Lekki Concession Company, LCC has revealed that they are willing to cooperate with the Judicial panel in Lagos and show the footage of Lekki toll gate shooting. This revelation was made known by Mr Gbolahan Agboluwaje, the agency’s Head of the Legal Department who appeared before the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS and related abuses and Other Matters. Agboluwaje also disclosed that there are hours of recordings on the CCTV footage. Commenting on summons of presenting the October 20 footage, an investigation report and any other document, Agboluwaje stated that no investigative report or document is available. The federal government has approved the resumption of the collection of Service-Based electricity Tariffs (SBT) from next week, after sealing a deal with organised labour. The government was forced to suspend the implementation of the new electricity tariff regime in September, following a threat of industrial unrest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), its affiliates and allies. However, the federal government and organised labour have resolved that the tariffs for certain categories of power consumers should be reviewed downward. While the tariffs for customers in A and B bands were reduced by 10 per cent, the tariff for C band customers was reduced by 30 per cent. For customers in the D and E bands, their tariffs remain frozen, which implies that there is no increment. Nigerian celebrities have reacted over the social media regulation bill, pushed by former actor and law maker Desmond Elliot. Desmond Elliot at the Lagos State House of Assembly, spoke on the negative impact of social media, as he called for social media regulation. He also referred to Nigerian youths as “children” which has caused controversy on social media, as Nigerian youths slammed him for his statement. Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak was ordered back to prison Thursday as the country’s Supreme Court upheld a 17-year jail term for bribery and embezzlement offences.    The conservative Lee, who served as president from 2008 to 2013, had been out on bail awaiting the ruling and was not in court for the decision, but police were seen at his Seoul home to take him away, according to reports.  The ruling is not subject to further appeal and at age 78 means Lee is likely to die in prison unless he receives a presidential pardon. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a second national lockdown for at least until the end of November. Mr Macron said that under the new measures, starting on Friday, people would only be allowed to leave home for essential work or medical reasons. Non-essential businesses, such as restaurants and bars, will close, but schools and factories will remain open. Covid daily deaths in France are at the highest level since April. Despite wide support for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s candidate for the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the US has expressed its opposition to her emergence. Okonjo-Iweala had emerged winner of the race with support from 104 of all 164 member countries of the WTO. Those countries include many in Africa and the European Union, where she had received public support. Despite being an American citizen, sources say the US does not consider Okonjo-Iweala as being committed enough to the interests of the world power at the flagship trade body. Bloomberg had initially reported that the US was leaning towards Yoo Myung-hee, the South Korean candidate. Bryce Baschuk, Bloomberg’s WTO reporter, also tweeted on Wednesday that the US is opposed to Okonjo-Iweala’s emergence and the road forward remains “unclear”.
